Alexander Maß

Alexander Maß is a German artist working at the intersection of moving image and sculptural installation. His practice focuses on the interplay between ecological systems, emotional processes, and socio-political structures, often questioning the conditions under which knowledge is produced and perceived.

His short film A Day Longer Than a Day has been shown at international film festivals in New York, Paris, Athens, London, Canberra, and Berlin. It was also exhibited as a sculptural video installation. Europa, his latest cinematic sculpture, premiered at an art festival in Berlin in summer 2024. In addition to his artistic production, he has participated in full-length theatre projects and created documentary works on environmental and land-use issues, including a short film produced in the eastern Andes of Ecuador for the NGO Fundación Cordillera Tropical.

This documentary work evolved from an interdisciplinary academic foundation. Alexander completed a postgraduate degree in environmental resource studies in Christchurch, New Zealand, followed by a diploma in public health management in Berlin. At the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), he developed an art-based thesis critically examining methodological norms in economic research and the role of the researcher. He later attended film seminars at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he began integrating visual storytelling with research-driven inquiry.

His current work centers on cinematic sculpture—video art projected onto freehand-carved metal reliefs—merging socially and ecologically engaged themes with new visual effects.
